Chayav Misa (חייב מיתה) for having long Payos

Daf Shel Shabbos Rosh Chodesh Tamuz

Ta’anis 17 a-b

אף פרועי ראש במיתה

Mori V’rabi Hagaon R. Shlomo Miller Shlita, said, “  A Kohen

whose Payos are longer than a few millimeters (more than 30
days growth) would be Chayav Misa, if he enters the Bais Hamikdash*.
Payos are Sa’aros Rosh which requires to to be cut once in 30 days”.

A Kohen Gadol had to cut his hair once a week and a king every day.
Their Payos were even shorter. (if you can call it Payos)

לז"נ הקדושים, מלכה בת ר' מאיר שלמה ואת שני בניה ,ניסן ופנחס הי"ד יום השנה הוקבעה לכ' סיון

For part 1 see here

Part 2

R. Chaim Brisker zt”l said, "a Choleh who is not obligated to fast, has no reason to be Machmir and fast. "

R. Chaim explained, Since  Cholim were never part of
the Gezairah( to fast). Chazal were Gozer only for healthy people to fast.

Therefore there is no point  to be Machmir . Had Chazal included everybody in the Gezeiras Ta’anis and then exempted  the Cholim, then there would be an inyan,
(only when possible and no harm), to be Machmir and fast .

Perhaps we can say the same Sevarah (logic) for someone who is underage (15-18 years) on the fast of 20th Sivan. Being those under 15 &18 were never included in the Gezeirah, there is no point, even for over 12 – 13 olds (after Bar/ Bat Mitzvah) to be Machmir and fast.

The 4 fasts where children do fast, is only because of Chinuch. Whereas  20th Sivan fast starts at ages 15 & 18, Chinuch is not applicable after Bar/Bat Mitzvah. כנלע"ד

Gedolim Pictures

The Italian Chachamim ( Gedolim) shaved their beards*, grew long hair and didn't wear Yarmulkas

Today, this sounds very strange, but it wasn't then.

The picture of R, Moshe Chafetz (Meleches Machsheves)was doctored and a Yarmulka was added on.by an  ignorant person/artist.

He also made him look older than the original picture, not knowing Ben Meah Shana is a play on words and meant the Gematria of Meah (46 years) and not hundred
years. (R.M. Ch. died at age 47)

The Maharshal and other Poskim hold, Halachicly  there is no reason not to say Dvorim Shebikdusha without a head covering.

R Yehuda Arye Modina** (Bais Lechem Yehuda- Ari Nohem etc.) writes on himself, he learned without head covering...

The Bais Yosef and others argue, and require head covering even when not saying Devorim Shebikdusha..

*The Chasam Sofer writes all Chachmei Italy(even Kabbalists) were clean shaven.
** He also was the mechaber of the Yom Kippur Katan Piyut "Yom Zeh Yehi Mishkal-"

Can you Solve This Riddle?

?למה זה תשאל לשמי

ראשון בראשון הוא שלישי

When did Rus have her Giur ?

From the Pasuk , כי אל אשר תלכי אלך  we see that Rus was Megayer after the death of her first husband.
If that is true then we need to understand why was it necessary  to be Meyavem Rus? The first marriage was invalid.(she wasn't Jewish)

Answer I heard from Mori V’rabi Hagaon R. Shlomo Miller Shlita:

Rus was Megayer before her first marriage. This Giyur was assumed to be invalid because she accepted only 612 Mitzvohs.
She had not accepted The Mitzvah of not marrying a Moavi.
It was not yet known  that a female Moavi may marry a Yisroel.
After the death of her husband she was Megayer a proper Giyur and accepted  all 613 Mitzvohs. (כי אל אשר תלכי אלך)

Once Chazal were Mechadesh the Halacha   מואבי ולא מואבית
this validated  her first Giyur retroactively . She hasn’t rejected
a single Mitzvah and therefore her marriage was valid and required
Yivum.

which fast ?

When do males start fasting  from age 18 years and older and females from age 15 years and older ?

?
תענית כ' סיון

Rabeinu Tam was Gozer  Ta’anis on  20th of Sivan. for one of the first blood libels against the Yidden in Blois France. (12th century )

During the Gezeiras Tach v’Tat (Chmielnitzki ym”s-17th century) ,the Va’ad Arba Artzos were Gozer Ta’anis again, on the 20th of Sivan.

The Sha’arei Teshuva (O. Ch 580 ) writes, they found the Pinkas (Kehilla Records)  and in it was

written ,“They were Gozer Ta’anis, only for males older than 18 yrs. and females older

than 15 yrs.”

This is in accordance with the Magen Avraham (576:10) who writes, “When we are Gozer Ta’anis Al

Kol Tzoroh Shelo Tavo, The minimum ages for fasting are 15 & 18 years."

1,000 Words Starting With Alef

אלף אלפין ישמשוניה ורבו רבבן קדומהי
Daniel 7

R. Moshe Zechus wrote a poem containing 1,000 words  all starting with the letter Alef.
He named it  אלף אלפין based on the Pasuk
( In Daniel the translation is, thousand times a thousand-million)

Since then, there were three more people who wrote אלף אלפין poems with a thousand Alefs.
One of them was a Rev.J. Kohn- Zedek (Katz ?) who wrote a Hesped on R. Nosson Adler zt”l chief Rabbi Of England Mechaber of Nesina Lageir.

EvenThe Shar Blatt has many alefs

Blowing Shofar On Shabbos-Todays Daf Yomi

Daf Hashavua

Rosh Hashanah 29b

R. Akiva Yosef Schlesinger zt”l the son in law of R. Hillel Lichtenstein zt”l (Kolomai) tried to convince the Gedolim to blow Shofar on Rosh Hashana that falls on Shabbos.
He claimed, R. Shmuel Salant and the Aderes both agreed with him.

In the years 1904 &05 Rosh Hashana fell on Shabbos. He tried to organize for a Sephardic & Askenazi Bais Din to sit at the Churva Shul and to blow Shofar. For some reason the opposition was too strong and it never materialized.
One of his arguments was, The Rif is the one, who holds to keep two days R.H. in Eretz Yisroel. We all follow his Psak. It is the same Rif who holds*, where there is a Bais Din sitting you do blow Shofar on Shabbos Rosh Hashana. (R.Y.B. Zakai) If we rely on the Rif not to put on Tefillin on the second day R.H., then for sure we can rely on his Psak to blow Shofar on Shabbos.
It is interesting, in the Cairo Genizah they found a Piyut, describing blowing Shofar on Shabbos, by attaching the Shofar to a pillar and the Ba’al Tokeah putting his mouth to the Shofar without holding it in his hands.

The Rif set up a Bais Din in Fez and blew Shofar on Shabbos.

Should One Stand During The Reading Of Aseres Hadibros

1) The Shu"t Harambam # 46 says not to stand up when the Aseres Hadibros
are read.(Ta'arumos Haminim)

2) The Yavetz ,Chida etc. bring the Minhag of standing up for the Aseres
Hadibros.

3) The Igros Moshe (O.Ch. 4 - 22) says even if your Minhag is to remain seated and you are in a Shul where they stand up, you must stand up. (Minhag Hamakom)

4) Reb Yosef Shalom Elyashuv (Shiurei Brachos 12a) Even when in a Shul where
they all stand, you should not stand up (if you are sitting). because, standing up for the Aseres Hadibros is Neged (against ) Halacha.

Daf Yomi-Rosh Hashana 24a

Daf Hashavua

R.H. 24 a&b

The Gemoro (Avoda Zarah 53a) and Shulchan Aruch (Y.D. 141-8) say, “You are not allowed
to replicate the shulchan and menorah  etc. of the Bais Hamikdash. The type of metal
or size doesn't matter.  You may not make a seven branch Menorah”*.

The Chasam Sofer (Toras Moshe Parshas Yisro) writes (based on a Tosfos Yoma 54b) that
wood tables may be made, because we  hold, wood tables were posul in the Bais Hamikdosh .
Metal tables, however may not be made, because any metal table in the Bais Hamikdosh is kosher b'dieved.
The Ch. S. continues that he sees no heter for the matzoh bakery to have copper tables.

The Darkei Teshuva (Y.D. 141-8) argues with the Ch. S. , he writes,
We find  the Gemoro (Shabbos119a) R. Chiya b Aba praised the ba’al habayis who
brought in l’kovod shabbos a golden table. If it would be assur to make, he would
not have praised him.
*There are some poskim who hold that if the branches are not in line, then
even a seven branch menorah is o.k. The  Bchor Shor, Pischei Teshuva and Chida ,
etc. disagree.
They claim that it is assur and not to be meikil (lenient) being we are dealing
with an issur deoriesa.(Lo sa’asun iti elohei chesef--)

I am just wondering if the same logic would also apply to stainless steel tables,
used in commercial kitchens and matzah bakeries, metal furniture (table) etc..
Shouldn't we  be machmir like the Chasam Sofer, being we are dealing with an issur deoriesa?)
