zecher zeicher

There is a Machlokes between the Minchas Shai, who
says you are supposed to pronounce "Zeicher" with a
Tzeirei and the Heichel Habracha who holds to pronounce
it with a Segol, ," Zecher".

The Minhag is to read it twice, Zecher and  Zeicher.

The Ma'aseh Rav (134) writes The Gra originally
read "Zeicher". Later in life he changed
his mind and read Zecher..

It seems, that the Gra never read it twice Zecher and Zeicher

It is not a Bubbeh Ma'aseh

Where does the term Bobbe Maase Come From?

It is not a Bubbeh Ma'aseh. It is a Boveh Ma'aseh

Reb Eliyahu Bachur*was the typesetter (Zetser) of the
first printed Shas.(Bomberg)  From then on, whenever
a printing mistake is found in any Sefer, we put the blame on
the " Bachur Hazetser”.
He wrote many Seforim on Dikduk ,Mesorah and Ta’amim.
He was the first to translate the Chumash in Yiddish.
He wrote and translated other Seforim and books in Yiddish.

He translated (Yiddish) a story about a prince called
Boveh Dantuna. This  book was called “Boveh Buch”.
Boveh Buch was the first Yiddish novel .
The expression Bubbeh Ma’ases, referred to the
Boveh Buch which was a fiction. It has nothing to do with a
grandmother(Bubbeh)  but a prince called Boveh.

*Most Seforim   quote him,  as “Habachur”
It is unknown why he was called Habachur,
Because he was a married man.
Some speculate that he got married late
and Habachur remained stuck to his name. Others claim

Habachur means the chosen.

Chasam Sofer And Chasidim

There are numerous Teshuvos, Chasam Sofer where he
is critical of Chasidim who claim their Nusach Hatefilah
(Sfard/ Ari) to be superior over Nusach Ashkenaz. (reason they switched from Ashkenaz to Sfard)

The Chasam Sofer opposed this so strongly that he ended up asking Mechila from the Yismach Moishe.(for going overboard in his opposition)

There is however, a Tehuvas Maharashdam (O..Ch 35)
who claims, The Sephardic Paytonim  have a simpler
language, where everybody can understand, whereas the
Ashkenazi Paytonim use difficult words and even the
Shatz doesn't understand what he is saying..

He therefore even recommends to switch to Nusach Sfard, which is a superior Nusach.  He claims "Al Titosh Toras Imecha is only applicable when there is a small Issur involved  and not for changing a Nusach Hatefilah.

The Ch. Sofer (Hagohos O.Ch.68) writes that the Mahrashdam
wasn't aware of the Magen Avraham(68) who writes. "you are
not allowed to change the Nusach Hatefilah because
there are 12 gates in heaven, one for each Shevet. Each one
has his own Minhag. The Yerushalmi says, they are all equal
you should not change from the Minhag of your fathers."

Had the Maharshdam been aware of this M.A., he wouldn't
have written what he wrote..

This coming Shabbos (Zachor) in the Piyut from E.b. Kalir:

אץ קוצץ בן קוצץ , קצוצי לקצצ, בדבור מפוצץ,רצןצי לרצץ

Yarhtzeit Candle

There is no mention in Shas, of Ner Neshamah (Yahrzeit Licht).
The Mishna in Ms.Brachos (53a) that says not to use a Ner Shel
Meisim for Havdalah, refers to a candle used for the Levaya etc.
and not a Yahrzeit candle, which probably may be used for Havdalah.

The Gemoro in Kesubos (103a) Rebbie left a Tzavo’oh  with his
sons to have a candle burning  at the table,  refers  to
Shabbos candles and not Yahrzeit candles.

The first mention of Ner Neshama is probably the Kol Bo in
Hilchos Yom Kipurim. The Kol Bo writes to light a Ner
for deceased parents, on Erev Yom Kippur, so they will have
a Kapparah.
It is very likely, the parents have a Kapparah, because of the Klall
of  ברא מזכה אבא  , The Mitzvohs a child does benefits
the deceased parents.

The Tur writes (630) There is a special Inyan to have

Click Here To Get A Ner Mitzvah 9 Day Memorial Yahrtzeit Candle Pack of Two From Amazon
lots of candles in Shul on Yom Kippur.
In the olden days, the largest and one of the few
expenses  a Shul had, was Ner Lamo’or. Bees wax was a very
expensive commodity .

It is possible, the Chachamim tried to entice the people
to donate Ner Lamo’or, so they attached the special
Segulah of Kappara for the Meisim, a Siman Tov for the
living and the Ner Hashem Nishmas Adam for a Yahrzeit.

Did You Know (31)

According to R.M.Sternbuch Shlita:

For the Arba Parshios you should listen to the Kriah and not read along with the Ba'al Koreh.

His reasoning,
The Arba Parshios you are Yotzei with "Shomea Keoneh".
This doesn't work when you are reading along..

Siyum

לע"נ אמי מורתי מרת געלא בת ר' אברהם אשי זצ"ל*
                                                                                                                     ד' אדר א'  ה,תשע"ד                    The Shach ( Y.D. 246:27) quotes the Shut Maharam Mintz
” The Minhag was for all Ba’alei Batim to attend  the Yeshivah
at the beginning of the Zman.(To participate in the starting of
the Mesechta) When the Mesechta was completed they were
invited for the Siyum.”

According to the Shach, it seems,  participants of a Siyum should
attend not only the completion of the Mesechta but also the
starting of the  Mesechta.

We find in most Drashos for Siyumim, the Darshonim connect
the beginning of the Mesechta to the end.
It is possible the intention was,  for those who have  not been
at the starting of the Mesechta, should at least
learn the beginning by listening to the Drush.

*The Chavas Yair wrote זצ"ל  for his grandmother. I took the liberty to do
so for my mother zt"l as well, for she was a true Tzadekes.

משנכנס אדר מרבין בשמחה

Halachically "משנכנס אדר מרבין בשמחה" is not acceptable
(according to the Rambam or the Shulchan Aruch)

The Gemoro (Ta’anis 29a ) "In the name of Rav it was said,
the same way, when the month of Av comes in, you reduce
with Simcha, so too when the month of Adar comes in you
add with Simcha".

The Rambam and Sh. Aruch bring the Halacha of

M'shenichnas Av Mema'atin B'simcha.

They do
not* mention M'shenichnas Adar Marbin B'simcha.

The obvious reason is, there is no such  Halacha to be
Marbeh B’simcha when Adar comes in.

The Chasam Sofer (O.Ch 160) explains
why we don't Pasken Marbin Besimcha in Adar.

* The Magen Avraham does mention it

מחר יהיה האות הזה

Lekovod the upcoming Bris of my Einikel
The Mahril writes to look for a Sandek
who is an Adam Kasher [V’tov]  (honest
& good person )  so that Eliyahu Hanavie
will attend.
The Mahril seems to say, Eliyahu Hanavie
only attends  Brisos, where the Sandek is
an Adam Kasher [V’tov].

Originally the Minhag was, to say a Tefillah
for the Refuah of the mother and child on
the Kos Shel Bracha. Afterwards, both, the mother
and child drank from the Kos.

The reason we say Aleinu after the Bris, is
because we are supposed  to skip the Aleinu
after the Davening, and end the Davening with
the Aleinu of after the Bris.

Torah Trivia-Parshas Shekalim

only for Amie Ha'aratzim?

Amei Ha"aretz Shuls, say Yotzros

This Shabbos Parshas Shekalim , most shuls will say Piyut (Yotzros) during or after chazoras
hashatz. The Piyut said during chazaras hashatz  is called Kerovos *1 or Kerovotz *2.

Adding Piyutim to the tefilos started in the times of the Gaonim .
When the minhag started ,there was strong opposition from some of the Gaonim.
The  reason for opposition was    1) Meshane Mimatbea  Shetovu Chachomim (changing
the nusach hatefillah that the Anshei Kneses Hagedolo established.  2) Hefsek in middle
of the tefillos.

The Otzar Hageonim ( Brochos 178-180) quotes R. Nachshan Gaon “ In the Mesifta and
wherever there are Rabanan they don’t change the tefillos from the way the Rabanan
established. They also don’t bring in to the Bais Hakneses a chazzan that knows piyut.
A  Bais Hakneses where Piyut is said, testifies on themselves that they aren’t  Talmidei Chachamim.”
*1 see Abudraham 2 reasons why it’s called Kerovos

              *2 Tosfos calls it Kerovotz (Brochos34a A.Z. 8a)

Daf Hashavua Kesubos 8b

Daf Hashavua

Kesubos 8b
בעל הנחמות ינחם אתכם
Today it is quite common, for Aveilim who sit Shiva L”A
to place a sign with the Nusach of Nichum Aveilim
so that it should be said properly.
(“Hamakom Yenachem Eschem  etc.”)

There are many Toirehs  said and published on the
Nusach . (Why the word Hamakom instead of Hashem)

This Nusach is actually nowhere to be found, not in Bavli,
Yerushalmi, Tur , Shulchan Aruch or other Poskim.
The Perishah brings a Nusach that is very close to
this Nusach but it starts with “Hashem” and
not “Hamakom”.

The first one to use this Nusach is the Shvus Yakov.
He writes, when there are two Aveilim r”l, one
is Menachem the other and says
המקום ינחם אתכם ואותנו בתוך וכו

Mistakes

1) The Seder Hadoros writes in the Hakdama, why his
Sefer is so important, because without the knowledge
of history even Gedolim made mistakes. (he names
some of them)

2) R. B. Epstein in his Sefer Mekor Baruch points out
a major mistake the Seder Hadoros made by continuing
two sentences as one.

3)  .R.B. Epstein in his Sefer Torah Temimah made
a major mistake, the exact type as the Seder Hadoros.

The Mussar Haskel is , by pointing mistakes others
made, you will end up doing the same.

Last week I pointed out two mistakes of others.

Last week, I made two mistakes I know of.

Did You Know?

Did you know?  (28)

According to the Chasam Sofer (Y.D. 2:283) since Kosher Mezuzos, have a Chezkas Kashrus, there is no need to check them again for Chaseiros V'yaseiros. All you need to check is, that no mold has crept in.

Did you know?  (29)

According to R.S.Z. Auerbach zt"l, Mezuzos that are wrapped in saran wrap or glass casings (no moisture) needs no checking .

The Holy Ibn Ezrah

The Ibn Ezrah (Shmos 20 :1) lists the differences
between the Aseres Hadibros in Parshas
Yisro and Parshas Voeschanan.

One of the differences he lists is , In Parshas Yisro
it says עבדו ואמתו first and then שורו וחמורו
and in Parshas Voeschanan it says first שורו וחמורו
and then עבדו ואמתו  .

Yet if you look both in Parshas Voeschanan ,
and in  Parshas Yisro it says   first עבדו ואמתו
and then שורו וחמורו  (no difference)

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            הפלא ופלא

The Chasam Sofer vs. The Rosh Yeshiva-Parshas Yisro

The Chasam Sofer (Parshas Terumah) writes:

"The Luchos had 21 ממי"ן סתומות  (Mem Sofis) and 2  סמכי"ן .The Gematria = 960  same as
16x60.

The Mogen Avraham writes, the reason we spill 16 times from the wine (Seder night)
because the sword of Hashem is called יו הך

The Chasam Sofer adds to this -The Shishim Giborim (60) are Mevatel from the Bnei Yisroel the Cherev.(16)

And even though the Mazik is a Beryah it is Batel with 960*

A Rosh Yeshiva sent in a letter to a Torah Journal called "Kerem Shlomo" (Bobov)
exclaiming in wonderment, because he found   22  ממי"ן סתומות  (not 21)

He ends his letter "דו"ק ותשכח וצ"ע  "

I counted and found the  Heiligeh Zeidah was right with his count. There are only 21 ממי"ן סתומות

A Peleh on the Rosh Yeshiva and on the Journal.

Rashbi argues on the Zohar ???

Yerushalmi Shekalim
Perek 6 Halachah 1 (16b):

How were the Luchos written?

R. Chanina ben Gamliel says 5 dibros on each Luach (5+5)

The Rabonan says 10 on each Luach (10 +10)

R. Shimon bar Yochai says 20 on each Luach (20+20).

10 in the front & 10 in the back of each Luach.

R. Simai says 40  on each Luach
(40+40) 10 dibros on all 4 sides of each Luach.

Had this been a  Machlokes in Halacha, we would definitely  not pasken like Reb Chanina ben Gamliel  who said it had 5 dibros on each Luach. (daas yochid, all others claim
to have at least,10 dibros)

It is interesting that all pictures and Luchos in Shuls  depict only 5 dibros on each Luach.

The Zohar* also holds, like Reb Chanina Ben Gamliel. that it
had  only 5 dibros on each Luach.(5+5)

It seems, R.Shimon bar Yochai,
who said it had 10 dibros on both sides. (20+20)
would argue on the Zohar.(only 5)

Did You Know

According to R.Y.S .Elyashuv,* Even if you are in a  Shul
where the Minhag is to stand up for Aseres Hadibros, you
should remain seated, because standing up
(for Aseres Hadibros) is Neged** Halacha***.

*The Igros Moshe (O.Ch.4:22) argues and holds to follow Minhag Hamakom.

***The Tashbatz does bring this Minhag

Is The Tu Beshvat Seder הכל בסדר ?

The Satmarer Rebbe R.Yoilish zt"l used to say " When things

are going OK, the Tziyoinim say HAKOL BESEDER. They forget

that at the Seder, there is also Maror ."

At the Tu Bishvat Seder.Maror is not served.

Some claim, The Tu Bishvat Seder originates from the Ari Zal. In his

Kesovim there is no mention of a Seder on Tu Bishvat.

The first one to mention this Seder is the Sefer Chemdas HaYomim.

There is a whole Perek describing how to perform the Seder.

"Various Perakim from Tanach and Zohar are to be said. Four

cups of different wines are drunk. Mezonos and fruits are eaten. Before

each fruit you have Kavanah of a different Tziruf of the Shem Havyah."

In 1753, this Perek was reprinted as a separate Kunteres called

"Kunteres Pri Eitz Hadar"  Since then, it was reprinted many times

and the Seder became very popular amongst the Mekubalim.

The Sefer Chemdas Hayomim was printed without a Sha'ar Blatt.

The Ya'avetz claimed that the Mechaber was the Navi Sheker

Noson Hoazosi, the right hand man of Shabtai Zvi  Ym"s.

There were Gedolim who disputed the Ya'avetz and claimed

the Sefer was written by an unknown holy man.

The Chemdas Hayomim writes to have Kavanah at the Seder ,

" העץ הנחמד בן ישי חי על האדמה

Someone revealed, this to be the same Gematria as Shabtai Zvi.

(317=315+2) . Also     העץ הנחמד = 390 the same as שצ

This gave Chizuk to the side who claimed the Sefer is from

Noson Hoazosi.

The publisher of the Amsterdam edition  who was aware

of the controversy, wrote in the Hakdama

"ואם תמצא בו פרי שאינו נחמד למראה,
                                                                                                                השלך הקליפה ואכול תוכו"
