English Chumashim

Agudas Harabonim forbade translating the Chumash into English

On the 26th of Sivan 5673 (1913) R. Chaim Hirshensohn z”l
proposed at the Agudas Harabanim Asifa, to oppose
any translation of the Tanach into English, regardless how
authentic and correct the translation was done.

Only by the Goyim do you have a King James version for the
English and a  Luther for the Germans etc. For Yidden, it is
against Ruach Yisroel (Jewish spirit). The only translations we 
may have are the Targum and the Meforshei Hatenach based 
on Chazal.
The Agudas Harabanim adopted his proposal to oppose
the English translation of Tanach.  


The famous philanthropist  Yackov Schiff donated $50,000. to

translate the Tanach into English.

PARSHA & DAF HASHAVUA-Who Is First ?

וימת נדב ואביהוא (במדבר ג:ד)
בנות צלפחד מנאן הכתוב דרך גדולתן (ב"ב קכ ע"א)


The רשב"ם explains that when the Torah is referring to their marriage then it lists them in the order of their age because the norm is for the older one to marry before the younger one (and that's how it actually happened).

Some Poskim say that this rule of not marrying off a younger sibling before an older one applies only to females.

Males who have the Mitzvah of פרו ורבו there is no reason of holding back the Mitzvah because of an older brother who is not married yet.(  אג"מ-מהרש"ם)

Some want to prove this from נדב ואביהוא. Chazal tell us one of the reasons they were both punished was for staying 
single and not getting married. If אביהוא would have had to wait for his older brother נדב to get married then why 
was he punished.

This is not really a proof because if the older brother refuses to get married then there is nothing to wait for and there is
an obligation for the younger brother to get married.  Once נדב refused to get married then אביהוא was obligated 
to get married and yet he didn't, therefore, he too was punished.

The ש"ך (Y.D. 244:13) quotes the ב"ח " Both, brothers or sisters should not marry the younger one before 
the older one".

R.Moishe Feinstein zt"l (Igros M. E.H.2:1) says that the ב"ח is only applicable if both are engaged only then must 
we marry off the older before the younger.

A younger sibling (even sister) may get engaged before the older sibling and get married if the older is not engaged yet.

The   (מהרש"ם (ח"ג קל"ו  says that this Halacha is not a דין גמור but a Minhag Derech Eretz. Therefore in certain
cases ("בעושה משום דחק") it is permitted.

Parshas Hashavua:

The Rema (O.Ch. 428:6) writes, that for the תוכחה we don't call up by his name but we call up מי שירצה
whoever wants.

The  Biur Halacha writes that it doesn't mean that you call up "יעמוד מי שירצה" which has no טעם 
(doesn't sound right) it means you call up by his name someone who has agreed beforehand and
 is willing to be עולה . 

It is interesting that in the olden days when people still believed in the 11th אני מאמין of שכר ועונש it was a scary
thing to be עולה the תוכחה.  I haven't noticed today, the בעל קריאה (who usually  gets the Aliyah) to be 
scared or nervous during his Aliyah

שבור מלכא

King ארדשיר (r. 224–242) was  the founder of the Sasanian 
dynasty (Persian) He had a son שבור מלכא who succeeded him.

Sh'vor Malka's mother was  איפרא הורמז (mentioned numerous 
times in Shas)

ארדשיר together with his son שבור מלכא conquered Bavel 
from the Romans. There is a  town in Bavel named
 ארדשיר (Gittin 6a)


Untiשבור מלכא became king  the Yidden suffered terribly
under the Persians.
They were big רשעים. Rav said "rather under a Nochri
(Romans) than under a Chabor. (Shabbos 11a).

Their priests are known in Chazal as the חברים
(The correct pronunciation is Chaborim - (Chabor)
with a Bais and not with a Vais [see איוב מ: ל])

They worshiped fire and wouldn't allow the lighting of 
Chanukah candles. (Shabbos 45a)

שבור מלכא ruled in the year 240-271. He was very
friendly to the Yidden. There was even peace and 
tolerance between the Chaborim & Yidden.

שבור מלכא was very interested in the Mitzvohs and 
Minhagim of the Yidden. He even followed some
of their Minhagim.
He was a very close friend with שמואל the אמורא. 
Shmuel was also his advisor.

 שבור מלכא never killed any Yidden 
except for once when he killed 12,000 Yidden. The 
Gemoro (Moed Katan 26a) says it was their own fault 
because they rebelled against him. 

Shmuel himself was referred by רבא as שבור מלכא
(Bava Basra 115b- Pesachim 54a) Rashi explains because the Halacha
is like Shmuel the same as the laws of שבור מלכא. 

The Rashbam(Bava Basra) explains
same on both  רבה &שמואל why they were called שבור מלכא because
the Halacha is like them.

The סדר הדורות  writes the reason  שמואל was called
שבור מלכא because he was very close to שבור מלכא.

The Invented Yom Tov

Invented Yom Tov
In the Sefer Ta’amei Haminhagim(p262) In the chapter Inyonei Hilulla D’Rashbi it says:
  “The Yahrzeit day of the Tanna Reb Meir, is not mentioned anywhere.  People recently made up a new Yom Tov as if the Yahrzeit is on Pesach Sheini.  It is  known their whole  intention  was, to make money with another Hillula.”

He also quotes a letter from the Ish Haemes  R. Mottel Slonimer zt”l who harshly criticizes them  for being עובר בל תוסיף by inventing this new Yom Tov.

The Sdei Chemed (Asifas Dinim Ma'areches Eretz Yisroel) wrote a letter to the Sephardic Chachamim in T’verya ,asking for the source of the new celebration- the Hillula of Reb Meir.
“On  earlier celebrations (Lag Baomer) the Rabonei Ashkenaz
(Chasam Sofer Shoel Umeishiv)  have complaints &  are
pained and now we come up with a new Hillula”.

The Sephardi Chachamim answered,  even though
 the Yahrzeit of R.Meir  is not known it is still proper to do the
Hilulla to raise funds for the Bais Midrash built at the Tzion. 
The Sdei Chemed didn’t accept their argument.

In the Luach Davar Be'Ito ( M.Genuth), on the 14th Iyar
he entered Hillulas Reb Meir Ba'al Hanes
a few lines later in smaller letters he writes "There is no

Mesorah for the day of the Petirah".

There once was a person who had 15 children. One day one child gotsick and died. The following day another child became sick  and died. This continued on with all his children. By the end of the month all of his 15 children died.

Someone suggested that he throw a party and be merry to celebrate the stopping of his children’s death. 
Sounds absurd!

Reb Akiva had 24,000 Talmidim. All 24,000 Talmidim died. After they all died, we celebrate Lag Baomer because they stopped dying.

Sounds right?

The Pri Chodosh ( O Ch. 493 ) explains that the Simcha is, not for the stopping of dying but for the five new talmidim Rashbi acquired after the death of the 24,000.  

Perhaps we can say, There are 2 parts to Lag Baomer:

1) No אבילות   (weddings, music & cutting hair permissible)

 קצת שמחה(2 
 The reason for No אבילות is because they stopped dying.
There  are many different reasons for  אמבצי )  קצת שמחה)  

In the Gemoro there is no mention of Lag Baomer.  The first to mention  Lag Baomer are some Rishonim in the name of the Gaonim.

The Rishonim, Tur, and Mechaber who do mention Lag Baomer don’t consider Lag Baomer  as a day of Simcha.
 All they say is that there is no  Aveilus on Lag Baomer (weddings, haircuts etc. are permitted) because  they stopped dying.  There is no mention of a Yom Tov on Lag Baomer

 It is only the Rema in the name of the Maharil who writes that 
on Lag Baomer we are “מרבים בו קצת שמחה.” (increase a little Simcha). 

The Rema does not give the reason why. It definitely 
is not because they stopped dying, but for other reasons. 

The Chasam Sofer (Y.D. 233) gives two reasons why we increase  with K'tzas Simcha on Lag Baomer

1)     הוד שבהוד Hod shebeHod  (Kabalistic)

2)      According to the Midrash, the מן (Manna)  came down the first time on Lag Baomer

The Chasam Sofer continues that it is not proper to establish Lag Baomer as a Yom Tov.

No נס happened on that day and no mention of it in the Gemoro or Poskim  as a Yom Tov. The extent of Simcha is only, no fasting and no hesped.

The Steipler zt"l said, " Chazal  who require
to check out the brother of the girl you intend to
marry, is only applicable in a time and place where
all are Frum*. In such a case if the brother is not 
Frum, then you should suspect that there is a bad root
in the Mishpacha.

In today's age where there are so many distractions
and the streets are flooded with immorality etc.
If the son ch"v  goes off the Derech it is not the fault 
of the father. It is not a פגם (blemish) in the family and 
one may marry the sister". 

With this סברא we can understand how
our Zaida Yitzchok married Rivka and wasn't
concerned with her brother Lavan. אמבצי

Parshas Hashavua
 ונסלח לו מחטאתו - וכי תבואו אל הארץ (ויקרא יט : כב - כג)

The Gemoro (Kesubos 111a)  says "אר"א כל הדר בא"י שרוי בלא עון" 
Whoever lives in Eretz Yisroel lives without sin. 

The פני יהושע qualifies this Chazal that it is only applicable in certain conditions. 
One of them is, only for one has in mind to be מקיים the Mitzvah of ישיבת ארץ ישראל

This statement won't apply for someone who happens to be living in E,Yisroel
because he was born there or for some other reason.

only if you don't have Hana'as Levisha (benefit  in wearing)
Therefore you may try it on, for size or looks.

When trying on, pants skirts etc. being it's embarrassing
to walk around in public without them, that is considered 
Hana'as Levisha, if you leave the dressing room to
a public area.(mirrors etc.)

Therefore you may not leave the dressing room while 

wearing these types of Shatnez garments.

Chasidim Would be Chayav Malkus If...

                                           Chasidim may not switch their clothes

The  (*חכמת אדם(פ"ט:א defends Yidden from (כל ארץ אשכנז) Germany who wear clothing similar to the Goyim.

The חכמת אדם says since in Ashkenaz they never instituted a dress code to be different than the Goyim, therefore there is no Issur of ובחקתיהם לא תלכו** by keeping their original dress, which is similar to the Goyim.

However, Yidden who originate from countries where they did institute a dress code that is different than the Goyim (regardless of the reason) they may not wear clothing similar to the Goyim.Those who do wear such clothing are עובר on ובחקתיהם לא תלכו and are חייב מלקות.

The חכמת אדם writes that when the Russian Government introduced into law requiring all to dress in modern  clothing , the Gaon held that it was יהרג ועל יעבור. We see from this the severity of this Issur. 

According to this חכמת אדם it's very likely, for those with a Chasidic background to be prohibited from dressing in
modern clothing.

*In the second print many parts of this סעיף was cut out by the censors and added that " it is not applicable because of דינא דמלכותא"
The new prints of today replaced it back again like the original first print.


** The Shut Chasam Sofer (O.Ch. 159) uses a similar Sevara why there is no Issur of ובחוקותיהם for shaving.

Yom Hatzmut -What The Gedolim Held

At the Knessia Gedola (Agudah) in 1936, there was a fierce debate between the Gedolim whether to accept the Peel Commission for partition of Palestine.

The Polish (Chasidic) Gedolim supported  Chalukah, thereby supporting establishing a Jewish state in part of Palestine.

The Litvishe & Hungarian Gedolim opposed Chalukas Ha’aretz and thereby were against the establishment of a Jewish state. (by insisting for the whole, chances of this to happen was nil)

Reb Moshe Sternbuch Shlita (Teshuvos  V’Hanhogos 2: 140) writes he heard this from R Y.B. Soloveichik zt”l (Yerushalayim) and wrote it down exactly as  heard.

R. Elchonon Wasserman &  R. Ahron Kotler zt”l  were very upset and were about to step out of the Knessia & Agudah. R.Chaim Ozer zt”l convinced them not to do so and to remain there.

The Brisker Rav zt”l was also very angry for even discussing the issue. He held establishing a State is a גרם שפיכת דמים.

 R.A. Kalmenowitz zt”l asked him why he was making such a big deal of it. The British Government couldn’t care less what the  Rabonim at the Knessia will decide.

The Brisker Rav answered him
  “  We find in Gemoro that the Ribono Shel Olam runs his world according to the Psak of the רוב (majority). At the Knessia there are רוב גדולי ישראל They are debating whether to accept part or to insist for the whole of Eretz Yisroel, but they all agree for the establishment of a Jewish State
He, therefore, fears  the Ribono Shel Olam
will make it happen,  and a Jewish State will be born.
