The Mekor Chaim (Bachrach) writes,
When saying the על חטא & ועל חטאים
you should strike with the fist on your 
chest at the word "שחטאנו" & שאנו "חייבים"

Most are unaware and strike at 

the words על חטא & ועל חטאים

Kiddush on Yom Kippur

        Kiddush on Yom Kippur
                              (especially this year)

Kiddush on Friday night is דאורייתא.
Mitzvos דאורייתא requires כוונה.

Kiddush on Yom Kippur is a מחלוקת between R.Akiva
Eiger who holds it is not דאורייתא unless it falls on a 
Shabbos and the Chasam Sofer (Hagahos O.Ch.271) who 
holds it is a Mitzvah דאורייתא to make Kiddush every 
Yom Kippur. (even weekday)

This year even according to Reb Akiva Eiger, when Davening the
Shmonah Esrei on Yom Kippur night you are required to
 have in mind when saying
ברוך – מקדש ישראל ויום הכפורים
to be Mekayam  (Yotzei)  Mitzvahs Kiddush.

Mori V'Rabi Harav Hagaon R. Shlomo Miller Shlita, said
Those who are not aware of this Halacha that מקדש ישראל ויום הכפורים
is the Kiddush of Yom Kippur will not be Yotzei even according to Reb Akiva Eiger 
in a weekday Yom Kippur since he is a מתעסק ( worse than no Kavanah)

Two Answers To The Yom Kippur Riddle

           A Gadol who is not Mechuyav in Tosfos Yom Kippurim
a) A Bachur who turns 13 on Yom Kippur is not Mechuyav in Tosfos Y.K. (Erev Y.K.)
b) A Bachur who turns 13 on Motzei Yom Kippur is not Mechuyav in Tosfos Y.K.* (Motzei Y.K.)

Another Yom Kippur Riddle

He is a גדול and not a חולה yet he is not מחויב in Tosfos Yom Kippurim.

Only On yom Kippur

Only on Yom Kippur are you allowed

Shulchan Aruch (O. Ch. 63: 2 )   Someone, who is sitting
and is מחמיר to stand up for קריאת שמע,
is called an “עברין” (sinner)
Mishna V’rurah s.k. 8  writes, "The Elyah Rabah in the name
of the Maharshal, “On Yom Kippur everyone* agrees, you
are allowed to stand up. (so to imitate the מלאכים)”

*The Pri Megodim disagrees

 I forgot there are two more things that 
may be done only on Yom Kipper
1) According to the Magen Avraham  & Mishna Verurah. (565) 
There is only one day in the year (Yom Kippur) that 
the Piyut האדרת והאמונה,לחי עולמים may be said בציבור 

In Nusach Sfard (Ari)  it is said every Shabbos. 
They don't follow this Psak of the  Magen Avraham &/M.V.
Nusach Ashkenaz says it only on Yom Kippur

2) Saying י"ג מדות & סליחות in the night time before חצות
is only allowed once a year, on Yom Kippur.


Yom Kippur Riddle

Only one day in the year

Doing this during the year is forbidden.
This עבירה is so severe, that in some cases
you put the person in חרם.
According to some Poskim, he is חייב מיתה
(בידי שמים)

Only one day in the year, on Yom Kippur,  not 
only is it permitted to do, but some Poskim 
consider it commendable.
This is the only thing that is allowed on Yom Kippur 
and אסור all year*. 

????

They Are Unaware

The  מגן אברהם ס' תקפ"א ס"ק י"ז  quotes the הגה במנהגי מהרי"ק
to start every Selicha with אלוקינו ואלוקי אבותינו unless the 
Selicha starts with the name of Hashem.

There are many printers of Selichos who weren't aware of
this מג"א and printed אלוקינו ואלוקי אבותינו on the Piyut of אל אמונה
 (סליחות ער"ה), or the Piyutim of Tzom Gedalyah and the 4th day

of עשי"ת that start with Hashem's name.

Answers from R. Aron Leib Shteinman & R.Chaim Kaniyevski shlita


Gemoro  (Shabbos 55b)   "Whoever says Reuvain sinned, is only mistaken. It says in the Pasuk  ויהיו בני יעקב שנים עשר   ,
all were equal ."

How does the Gemoro know that Reuvain didn’t sin?  Maybe he sinned and did Teshuva and therefore he is equal to the rest of the שבטים ?

R. A.L. Shteinman shlita answered

The Pasuk  ויהיו בני יעקב שנים עשר is written immediately after
The Maaseh of  וישכב את בלהה Reuvain didn’t do Teshuva only
after  the Maaseh of Yehuda and Tamar ,  while the brothers were
selling Yosef to the Yishmaeilim. He was equal to the brothers before
doing Teshuva because he never sinned.

R.Ch. Kaniyevski shlita answered
Had Reuvain sinned and done Teshuva, he would not have been
equal to the brothers. He would have been greater than them.

The Rema (O.Ch. 123:6) writes, 
The Chazan at the end of חזרת הש"ץ
does not say.יהיו לרצון אמרי פי
The Mishna V'rurah says the reason
is because he relies on the תתקבל
of the Kaddish, he will be saying 
after ובא לציון.(not to be repetitive)  

The M.V. also quotes the של"ה and
the גאון who argue and hold he should
say it.
The Minhag is to say it quietly, not to
offend the Psak of the Rema.

*Possibly the same reasoning would
apply during Selichos at שמע קולינו.

Since the Chazzan ends the Selichos
with the Kaddish w תתקבל. It would 
sound repetitive saying both יהו לרצון
& תתקבל, therefore, they instituted to 

say יהיו לרצון quietly.

5778 or 5943?-What Year Are We In ???

5778 or 5943?


According to our calendar, we will be ushering in on Rosh Hashana the year 5778

According to many, there are approximately 165 years missing from the cheshbon and the correct year would be 5943. (less than 60 years to the year 6,000)

My nephew R. Ari  Shlita wrote: 

"The cheshbon is as follows: 

Churban Bayis Rishon happened in 587 BCE - this much is indisputable, as it is corroborated by Babylonian, Egyptian, and Greek inscriptions which match very closely to the accounts in Malochim, Yirmeyahu, and Divrei Hayamim.

Churban Bayis Sheini is commonly taken to be 70 CE by secular historians, but it could be off by a year or two, so may have been 68 or 69. There is a machlokes between Rashi and Tosafos about whether the Bais Hamikdash was destroyed in the 420th year, or after 420 years (Avodah Zarah 9b). This machlokes is based on the fact that it was a motzoei shmittah year. Based on this, the churban should have been 68 or 69. However, we are not so concerned with one year, compared to the bigger problem of 165 years described below.

This puts 656 between Churban Bayis Rishon and Churban Bayis Sheini. The chronologies of these years are very well known, and we know exactly who were the Persian and Greek Kings during these years and how many years each of them reigned, based on multiple corroborating sources. We know exactly when Alexander conquered Israel (329 BCE), and this means there were at least about 400 years from him to the destruction. And the Persian kings from Cyrus to Alexander take up about 200 years. So there are about 600 years - 587 to be somewhat precise, that the Bayis Sheini lasted.

But according to Seder Olam, there should have been 70 + 420 = 490 years between Churban Bayis Rishon and Sheini. This means there are about 166 years missing from our current Jewish date of 5777. Or course, it could be off by a couple of years here or there due to kings starting their reign in the middle of a year, and the year being counted for both, and other such inaccuracies, but 5778 is definitely too low. In general, you need to add about 166 (or 164)."



This subject was addressed by many. It was first addressed by Azariah min Ha'edumim in his Sefer Meor Einayim written in the 1500s. Harav Shimon Schwab zt"l in 1961-2  5722 wrote a lengthy article on this subject. I cut out part of it. Long Face

Minhag Ashkenaz and some Chasidic Minyanim, 
the Chazan who Davens מעריב on Motzei Shabbos 
Selichos to sing the והוא רחום with a special Niggun.





The Imrei Pinchas* writes  it is called "The long Vehu 
Rachum" based on the סוד of אריך אנפין  (long face) 
Kabbalistic term for Hashem being patient
with us and giving us more time to do Teshuva.

Growing up as a child I do remember Der Lange 
Vehu Rachum and the Chometzdike Borchu. 
The Chazzan stretched out the Hu from Vehu and
 the Chu.from Borchu.

Halacha Mefureshes -Rosh Hashana

In Shulchan Aruch (O.Ch. 228:4)
gives a siman* "ב"ג המלך פת וילך*"

The Mishna Verurah explains,
"If המלך- Rosh Hashana falls on ב"ג
-Monday or Tuesday then פת -
you break off וילך from נצבים"
(two separate Parshios)

R. Elchonon Wasserman HY" D explained, that
when כלל ישראל are חס ושלום in need
of punishment then Hashem sends רודפים to
curse & harass the Yidden. 

By doing so the Yidden become the נרדף 
and  ואלוקים יבקש את נרדף even if the רודף 
is a צדיק and the נרדף is a רשע. For sure 
when the רודף is the רשע

This spares כלל ישראל from punishment.

When the UN condemns us Yidden (Israel בלע"ז)
with hundreds of resolutions against us,
they are actually doing us a favour, turning
us into the נרדף and Hashem protects us. 

אחינו כל בני ישראל הנתונים בצרה
המקום ירחם עליהם ויוציאם מצרה
לרוחה השתא בעגלא ובזמן קריב ,אמן

When Is Selichos

for Rosh Hashana and Friday night (Shabbos).
4)   Meiri: Mondays & Thursdays of the whole month of  Ellul  
5)  Shibolei Haleket: The Monday & Thursday before Rosh Hashana
6) Mateh Efraim: brings a Shita to start on the 15th of Ellul
7)  Shulchan Aruch: Rosh Chode sh Ellul
8)  Rema: Sunday (or 2 Sundays) before Rosh Hashana

Dont Forget


I found it written to say this תפילה before starting to learn
to prevent from forgetting.

There are three פסוקים to be said 3 times ישר והפוך (forwards & backward)

When saying the Pasuk of בחקתיך אשתעשע* backward, it might חס ושלום
translate like this,  " דברך your words- אשכח I shall forget- לא אשתעשע 
I shall not preoccupy myself - בחקתיך in your statutes."

This wouldn't sound like a תפילה not to forget. 

It is unknown who is the one who found it written and where did he find it.

toilet tank covers

Some Poskim forbid removing the toilet tank cover on Shabbos,
being the tank is מחובר לקרקע (attached to the ground).*   

Mori V'rabi Hagaon Harav Shlomo Miller Shlita, argues and
holds, since the cover is designed to be removed easily, it is
considered as if it has a handle. A cover with a handle may
be removed from a בור  (pit) which is מחובר לקרקע.** 

The tank cover is considered a כלי (vessel) and not בטל to the
מחובר tank.Therefore there is no סותר or מוקצה.
