The Four Senses

              *The four Brachos of Havdalah

The first Bracha Pri Hagafen is for the sense of taste.

The second Bracha Minei Besamim is for sense of smell.

The third Bracha Meorei Ha'aish is for sense of sight.

The fourth Bracha Hamavdil is for the sense of understanding.

The first sense is the lowest level. The mouth needs touch
the food (wine) in order to taste it.

The second sense doesn't require contact but is limited to
a certain distance to be able to smell.

The third sense, "sight" has also its limits but the distance of
sight goes much further than smell.

"Understanding" is the highest level. There are no limitations.

One can understand things happening on the other side of
the globe and beyond.

The Ribono Shel Olam created man in that order. The brains
on top of the eyes, the eyes on top of the nose and the nose
on top of the mouth.

אדר

What do the months of אדר, אלול & תשרי have in common?

for answer click here

No Such Halacha

part 2
משנכנס אדר מרבין בשמחה
No such Halacha

 *

The Gemoro (Ta’anis 29a ) In the name of Rav
it was said, "the same way, when
the month of Av comes in, you reduce with Simcha,
so too when the month of Adar comes
in you add with Simcha".

The Rambam and Sh. Aruch bring the Halacha of
משנכנס אב ממעטין בשמחה

They do not** mention משנכנס אדר מרבין בשמחה
The obvious reason is, there is no such  Halacha
to be Marbeh B’simcha when Adar comes in.

The Chasam Sofer (O.Ch 160) explains the reason.
"Since we don't Pasken like Rav that Aveilas starts on
Rosh Chodesh Av,(According to strict halacha it starts on
on Erev T.B.***), therefore we also don't Pasken
that Simcha starts on Rosh Chodesh Adar.

The Halacha in Sh. Aruch & Rambam of משנכנס אב ממעטין בשמחה
applies to only one thing, not to build a
Binyan Shel Simcha. All other types of refraining Simchas like
eating meat, drinking wine etc. start only on Erev T.B.

On this halacha we can't say The same as when Av comes
in you are not allowed to build Binyan Shel Simcha-- so too
when  Adar comes in you may build a Binyan
Shel Simcha. Building  a binyan Shel Simcha may be done all year round not only in Adar.
There is no such Halacha of Marbim Besimcha for Adar whereas there is a
Halacha in Rema to be Marbeh Ketzas Simcha on Lag Baomer.
It seems that a קצת שמחה mentioned in Shulchan Aruch is a greater שמחה
than a complete שמחה of משנכנס אדר that is not mentioned in Shulchan Aruch.

* According to the Shulchan Aruch & Rambam
** The Magen Avraham does mention it

***3 weeks, 9 days & Shavua Shechal Bo are Minhag

Lets Party And Be Merry -Part 1

part 1
משנכנס אדר מרבים בשמחה

The Rema (O.Ch. 493:2) writes that on Lag Baomer we
increase with a little Simcha "ומרבים בו קצת שמחה"

When Chazal tell us משנכנס אדר מרבים בשמחה, there is no mention of קצת

It seems the שמחה of Adar's arrival is greater than the שמחה of Lag Baomer.

Wouldn't it be more appropriate, when Adar arrives to at least do the same if
not more and dance to the music all night long, make a Hadlaka, party & be merry etc.

Why We Stand

The Mogen Avraham (417:1) writes, The Minhag is to stand when
the Chazzan announces (during Rosh Chodesh Bentching)
the day Rosh Chodesh will be on, similar to the times when they
were Mekadesh the Chodesh.

 R. Akiva Eiger zt"l , writes on himself  “בער אנכי"
(I am an AmHa’aretz)* and I don’t know where do we find קידוש החדש
was done standing. From the Mishna (R.H. 25b) it seems the
opposite, Bais Din was sitting, only the עדים were standing.”
(Bais Din announced מקודש while they sat)

I once heard an answer . In Pirkei D’rabi Eliezer it says
a Sefer Torah was brought in when the Bais Din said מקודש-.
When a Sefer Torah is brought in, everybody needs to stand up.

Our Minhag is, for the Chazzan to hold the Sefer Torah during
time he announces the new Chodesh. Perhaps it is done lezecher the
קידוש החדש where they brought in a Sefer Torah.

According to the Mishna Verura, (Shar Hatzion 146 sk18) there is no
חיוב to stand while the Chazan is standing and holding the
Sefer Torah,
(Rosh Chodesh Bentchen, Eil Molei, Mi Shebeirach Bahab etc.)

The Minhag is to stand because of הידור תורה .
The only time you must stand, is while the Chazzan walks
with the Torah or for Hagbah.

*We should all be an Am Ha'aretz like him.

Yarzeit of Rav Mottel Pogromansky כה' שבט זיע"א

The Torah World

וכל העולם כלו בשליש אמה, נמצאת-- אלפים וארבע אמות בעולם מאריכה (*סלוק פרשת שקלים)

The Gemoro (Eruvin 21a) and R.Eliezer Hakalir in Parshas Shekalim סלוק, compare the size of the world to the size of the Torah.

According to the Gemoro, the Torah is 3,200 times greater than the world. According to R. Eliezer Hakalir, it is 2,400 times greater.

It would seem from this that the Torah is finite the same way as the physical world is finite. However, we do know that the Torah is infinite and has no limitations.

Perhaps Chazal are not comparing the physical sizes of the two but are comparing the blessings and all the good things
that the world has to offer compared to the Torah which offers 3.200 or 2.400 times more.אמבצי

*The last Yotzer before the Shachris Kedusha by R. E. Hakalir

Yotzros-Torah Matzav

In Case You Will Wonder

This coming Shabbos when saying the סלוק some might wonder
why the Kalir says that the world is smaller than the Torah
by a fraction of 1/ 2,400 when the Gemoro (Eruvin 21a) says
that the fraction is 1/ 3,200.

Tosfos  (ד"ה אחד משלשת) points out that R.Eliezer Hakalir
argues on the Gemoro that holds that a זרת is a 1/2 an אמה
and the Kalir holds  that a זרת is a 1/3 of an אמה and therefore
his calculation is 1/2,400

The רשש has a solution  that the the Kalir will not argue on

the Bavli.

שבת לה' אלוהיך לא תעשה כל מלאכה

How do you have, someone doing a מלאכה on Yom Tov he is
חייב and on Shabbos, (same situation) if he does the exact
same מלאכה not only is he not חייב , he may even go ahead and
do it לכתחילה?

1)  A חולה מסוכן who is in a רשות היחיד  and needs to eat a fruit (Pikuach Nefesh)

2) There are two fruits available, one is attached to a tree in the רשות היחיד
of the חולה. The other one is not attached to a tree but is in a רשות הרבים.

3) On Shabbos it makes no difference which fruit the חולה is given.
(both Chillul Shabbos) One may be Mechallel Shabbos לכתחילה
pick the fruit off the tree or bring in the fruit from the רשות הרבים.

4) On Yom Tov by bringing in the (unattached) fruit from the רשות הרבים
there is no Chillul Y.T. Picking the fruit off the tree there is Chillul Y.T.

5) On Y.T. you may not remove the attached fruit in the רשות היחיד if you
can get the unattached fruit from the רשות הרבים.(no Chillul whatsoever)

On Shabbos you may pick the fruit off the tree לכתחילה
On Yom Tov if you  picked the fruit off the tree, you would be
חייב מלקות.

Mussar Without Halacha

Daf Hashavua

Bava Basra 21a

כ"ש דגריס טפי קנאת סופרים תרבה חכמה

The פתחי תשובה חו"מ קנו ס"ק יז quotes from the Sefer יד שאול
about a story that happened the old Melamdim would not allow
the new Melamdim to move into town to take away from them their
Parnasa.

He Paskens based on our Gemoro and Shulchan Aruch
"They have no right to stop them from moving into town because
קנאת סופרים תרבה חכמה"

The Chazon Ish ('אמונה ובטחון פרק ג) proves from this case
that Mussar without Halacha can at times be useless.
He explains it as follows.

"A Ba'al Mussar will usually defend the נרדף (underdog)  In our casewithout knowing the Halacha people will harass the new Rebbie for
taking away Parnasah from the old Melamed. They will consider
the new Rebbie as the רודף and the Melamed as the נרדף.

Actually, it is the opposite. The new Rebbie is the נרדף
being the Halacha gives him full authority to move in
and take the job for himself and is being harassed for
doing so. The רודף are the supporters of the Melamed
who harass  the new Rebbie.
One must know the Halacha not to confuse the נרדף
for the רודף

He died again

Daf Hashavua
Bava Basra 15a

The Gemoro asks  who wrote the last eight Pesukim in the Torah (וימת שם משה) and  answers two Tirutzim.

The Zohar*  has a third answer.
"Moshe was Niftar and Hashem brought him back to life. Moshe wrote then the last eight Pesukim, and died again."

The Malbim has a beautiful  pshat on the Pasuk
“תורת ה' תמימה    ”-The Torah is complete  – “משיבת נפש”- because Hashem brought back the  Nefesh of Moshe to write and complete the last eight
Pesukim in the Torah.

*With this Zohar we might be able to answer  Tosfos (Menachos 30a)  Kushya.
"How could Moshe have died Shabbos at Mincha time when that year the 7th
of Adar was on a Friday."
It is possible that Moshe died on Friday the 7th of Adar. He was brought back
to life and wrote the 13 Sifrei Toras on Friday. He died again on Shabbos the

8th of Adar.(אמבצי)

Why to say פרשת המן

click here to see why not to say parshas hamon

The Tur and the Mechaber write in the first Siman of the entire Shulchan Aruch " טוב לומר" (It's good to say פרשת המן etc.)

If they say that it's a good thing to say it, then we
can rely on them that it's good.

The Mishna Verurah (sk 13) quotes the Bais Yosef
the reason to say it is so to believe that Parnasa comes
with Hashgacha Pratis. The Mishne Verura explains, to believe that increase in Hishtadlus doesn't help to increase Parnasah.

The פרישה quotes the Yerushalmi in Ms.Brochos
(Aruch Hashulchan couldn't find it,) "Whoever says
פרשת המן EVERY DAY* will be guaranteed
not to miss his Mezonos. (Parnasa)

The תשבץ adds "ואני ערב" I am a guarantor.

blood/fast

4) Why do the Bechorim fast on Erev Pesach?
Why not have a special Yom Tov for being
saved?
5) Why is there a Chiyuv for the parent of a child
who hasn't even reached the age of Chinuch to
fast for the child?

*חלבי ודמי הנמעט בצומי
For Ta’anis Bechorim, a father or a mother is required
to fast for their child who is under Bar Mitzvah even  if
the child hasn't  reached the age of Chinuch.
No other Ta’aneisim is a parent required to fast for their child.

Ta’anis Bechorim is different than the other Fast days.
Fasting on the other days is done strictly for the Mitzvah.
Only Gedolim are Mechuyav to perform Mitzvohs.
Fasting Ta’anis Bechorim is  for protection of the Bechor.
All Bechorim regardless of age, need the protection.

The first nine Makos didn’t need a special protection for the
Bnei Yisroel. It was sent specifically, to the Mitzrim.
Makas Bechoros was different. It was sent down to all inhabitants
 of Mitzrayim, Yidden & Mitzrim.

For the  Jewish Bechorim not to die, they required Dam Pesach &
Dam Milah for protection. They also weren’t allowed to leave
the house. The Bechorim needed this special protection from
the Makah.

Chazal instituted Ta’anis Bechorim to commemorate the special
protection that was and is still needed  to save the Bechorim
from death  ח"ו.
The same way that in Mitzrayim all Bechorim (even infants
needed the protection of the Dam so too today even infants
need the protection of the fast. (אמב)צי)
